Animal Art

Animal Art KS1 is a seven-lesson art scheme that helps children develop key drawing skills through an exciting animals-around-the-world theme. Children explore how artists use pattern, texture, shape and colour by studying animal markings and features from different continents, including bold patterns, line textures, simple shapes and warm/cool contrasting colours. Through step-by-step modelling, discussion and independent practice, children learn to make thoughtful artistic choices and build confidence with pencil drawing and colouring techniques. In the final lesson, children consolidate their learning by combining these skills to design and create an imaginative animal for a class zoo.

Each of these seven ready-to-teach lessons come with a detailed plan, a set of engaging and informative PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources to support your children during their independent activities.

A Knowledge Organiser is available to support the learning in this scheme. It is included in the Complete Series download or can be purchased individually.

Lesson 1: Observing Patterns

In this first lesson, children will learn to look closely at animal patterns and understand that patterns are made when something repeats.

They will explore patterns found on animals, noticing where patterns appear and whether they are made using lines or shapes. Children will see how an observed pattern can be recreated and will learn that patterns do not need to be perfect, but should be careful and consistent. In their independent activities, children will apply this learning by identifying a pattern on an animal and recreating it using lines, shapes or objects.

This KS1 Patterns Art lesson includes an easy-to-follow plan, a set of engaging PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Animal Picture Cards
  • Animal Posters

Lesson 2: Designing Bold Patterns

In this second lesson, children will design bold repeating patterns inspired by African animals.

They will explore the patterns found on these animals and consider what makes a pattern bold, including the use of strong shapes, lines and repeating colour. Children will learn that artists take ideas from patterns they see rather than copying them exactly, and will think about the choices they make before starting their work. In their independent activities, children will apply this learning by designing their own bold repeating pattern using lines or shapes and repeating colour.

A detailed plan, a set of engaging PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources to support your children in their independent learning are all included in this downloadable KS1 Art lesson pack.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Animal Outline Sheets

Lesson 3: Combining Patterns

In this lesson, children will practise combining different patterns inspired by South American animals. They will explore animals that have more than one pattern and identify how shapes, lines and colours can be used together in a single design.

Children will learn that artists can combine pattern ideas rather than using just one, and will be encouraged to think carefully about which patterns work well together. Children will apply this learning by combining two different patterns on a frog design, deciding where each pattern will go and making the patterns repeat using bold colours.

This KS1 Art lesson pack offers a well-structured plan, engaging PDF slides to support teaching, differentiated activity options and ready-to-use printable resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Pattern Cards
  • Word Bank

Lesson 4: Creating Texture

In this lesson, children will explore animals from Asia and learn how artists can use different types of lines to show texture. They will look closely at the skin and coverings of animals such as tigers, elephants and peacocks, and identify textures like fur, wrinkles and feathers.

Children will learn that artists can create texture by using simple line patterns, changing the direction, length and spacing of their marks. Children will apply this learning by drawing their own animal textures using pencil lines, making careful choices to help their drawings look furry, wrinkly or feathery.

An easy-to-follow plan, a set of informative PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources to support your children in their independent learning are all included in this downloadable KS1 Art lesson pack.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Texture Help Cards
  • Texture Tools Test

Lesson 5: Drawing Animals with Shapes

In this lesson, children will explore animals from Australia and learn how artists can use simple shapes to help them draw.

They will look closely at Australian animals and identify the main shapes that make up the head, body and other body parts. Children will learn that artists simplify what they see by drawing big shapes first before adding small details. Children will apply this learning by drawing their own Australian animal using simple shapes and adding a few key details to make it recognisable.

Everything you need for a successful Art lesson is included in this downloadable pack: an easy-to-follow plan, a set of informative PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Shape Collage Instruction Cards
  • Shape Sheets

Lesson 6: Choosing and Using Colour

In this lesson, children will explore colourful butterflies from North America and learn how artists choose and use colour carefully.

They will identify warm and cool colours and discuss how contrasting colours can stand out next to each other to create a bold effect. In their independent activities, children will apply this learning by designing and colouring their own butterfly, choosing warm, cool or mixed colours and considering how their colour choices affect the finished design.

This KS1 Colour Art lesson includes an easy-to-follow plan, a set of engaging PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Differentiated worksheets
  • Describing Colours Sheet
  • Colour Challenge Sheet

Lesson 7: Designing an animal

In this final lesson, children will use the skills they have learned throughout the unit to design and create their own imaginary animal for a class zoo. They will combine shapes, pattern, texture and colour to produce a bold and imaginative artwork.

Everything you need for this KS1 Art lesson is included in this ready-to-teach pack: a detailed plan, a set of engaging PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and printable resources.
