What is a rite of passage?

This first lesson introduces your class to what a rite of passage is. Children will share their life experiences with one another, thinking about what the most important and significant events have been in their lives so far, and make inferences about events that may occur in the future.

Baptism

This Baptism KS1 lesson explains to children what a baptism is and why it is a Christian rite of passage. Your class will learn about how Christian children are baptised, going on to read the story of Jesus' baptism. They will also learn about some of the symbols and objects associated with Christian baptism.

Holy Communion

This lesson introduces children to communion and explains what it is. Children will read the Last Supper story and will learn about why bread and wine are important symbols for Christians. Children will focus on the first Holy Communion (which is celebrated by Catholics) and gain an understanding of the significance of this rite of passage for many Christians.

The final lesson in this scheme teaches your class about funerals and what Christians believe happens when a person dies.
