Decimal Place Value

Help your children understand the number system better with this series of 'Decimal Place Value' lessons for Year 6. They will recap what the value of each digit in numbers up to ten million represent, as well as the value of digits in numbers with up to three decimal places. Once this is established, they will learn to order, round and use decimals through a variety of activities and games.

Each lesson includes an easy-to-follow plan, an informative and engaging slide show for the teaching input, and differentiated worksheets.

 
Lesson 1

Reading and Writing

Kick-start this scheme of work with a look at large numbers with up to seven digits! The slides guide your class through reading and writing numbers in both numerals and words, identifying the value of each digit as they do so. They will start to order and compare large numbers too. Their independent learning activity has some fun differentiated crosswords to reinforce their learning, as well as a matching and ordering activity.

Decimal Places

This lesson teaches your class to identify the value of each digit in numbers with up to three decimal places. They will read decimals in words and numerals, and use their place value knowledge to start comparing numbers with up to three decimal places. The main activity has a fun board game to further challenge their decimal place value understanding, as well as fun game that challenges children to compete to create the highest number they can from digits they generate themselves.
