Lesson 2: Monet Landscapes

This Monet Landscapes Art lesson for Year 5/6 children starts by looking a little closer at the life of Claude Monet before exploring some of his most famous landscape paintings.

The included slideshow presentation then goes through a step-by-step process for how your class can create their very own Impressionist landscapes. They'll then follow these steps to create impressive artwork during their independent art time. There's also the option of going outside to paint an Impressionist painting just like Monet would have done.

This Monet Haystacks Art lesson for KS2 children looks at Monet's famous 'Haystacks' series and helps your Year 5/6 class to understand that the Impressionists were interested in light itself as a subject.

They will look in detail at some of Monet's haystack paintings before using a variety of techniques to recreate them for themselves, using colours to portray particular seasons. The slideshow presentation goes through a step-by-step process for how children can do this.

This KS2 Impressionism Art lesson explores some of Monet's famous paintings of cities, from the Gare St-Lazare of Paris to the Houses of Parliament in London.

After considering why the art establishment at the time thought paintings of industrialisation were not appropriate art subjects, your children will look at some of Monet's paintings of cities, then either create paintings of their own local town or city, or work as a class to recreate Monet's famous 'Sunset in Venice'.
