Pencil Cases

This series of six Design and Technology lesson plans, teaching ideas and resources will support your class in making their very own pencil cases! They will think about different materials used to make pencil cases and the different ways they are opened and closed. Your class will learn how to use a variety of stitches including running stitch, whip stitch and back stitch, as well as how to decorate their pencil case creations!

Containing detailed lesson plans, engaging slides, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printables, these DT 'Pencil Cases' lessons for Year 3/4 are a great way to get your class excited about working with textiles and will leave them with a beautiful and handy product at the end of it all!

Lesson 1

Investigating

In this first lesson, children will examine and describe a variety of pencil cases, identifying the key features and discussing the purpose of these features. Children will further analyse a range of pencil cases in their independent activities.

This lesson comes with an easy-to-follow plan, a set of PDF slides for the teaching input, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources to support your class in their independent work.

Lesson 2

Sewing Stitches

In this practical lesson, children will learn about a variety of hand-sewing stitches (running stitch, whipstitch and backstitch), then practise joining pieces of scrap material using different hand-sewing stitches.

Fastenings

Children will learn how zips, buttons, poppers and toggles may be used to fasten pencil cases. In their independent activities, they either practise sewing buttons and button holes, or sewing and attaching toggles and loops.
