The Four Seasons

Teach your Year 1 or Year 2 class about the weather patterns of the seasons with this Four Seasons KS1 Geography planning pack. Through these seasons lessons, your class will find out which months of the year belong to which season, as well as what the weather is like in spring, summer, autumn and winter, and what this means for animals, people and the landscape.

Each lesson comes with an easy-to-follow lesson plan, a slideshow for the whole-class teaching input, differentiated activity ideas to suit different learners in your class, as well as a range of printable resources, such as seasons worksheets, puzzles and picture cards, to support your class as they learn about the weather patterns of the four seasons.

Seasonal Months

The first lesson in this series teaches your class how a year is split into the four seasons and how each season lasts for three months. They will learn or recap the months of the year and identify which months belong to which season. It also briefly introduces what each season is like.

Spring

After recapping the names of each season and when they are, your class will find out all about spring. They will learn what the weather is like and what effects the spring weather has, such as the birth of baby animals due to warmer and longer days, and the growth of new flowers.

Summer

Summer is here! This lesson teaches your class about the hottest season of the year and prompts them to think about things they associate with summer, such as trips to the beach or picnics in the garden. After learning about the weather in summer, they will be able to express their understanding through a variety of activities, such as choosing items they would pack for a summer holiday or writing postcards to a friend.

Autumn

The focus for this lesson is autumn. Your class will look at some pictures of this season and describe what they can see, before finding out more about what the weather is like in autumn. There is then plenty of opportunities for them to get creative as they write autumn poems or create autumn leaf collages.

Winter

What word comes to mind when you think of winter? This question starts this lesson off, before investigating winter weather further. They will find out about snow, icicles, frozen lakes, dark mornings and more, before thinking about how the cold, wet and windy season of winter can be fun too!

Comparing Seasons

The final lesson in this series gives your class the chance to recall what they have learnt about the four seasons with a class quiz, before going on to compare the four seasons and identify differences between them. They can then express their knowledge through a variety of creative activities.
